Methodology

How the charts work

Real South African data, calculated automatically every Monday at 04:00 SAST. Strictly South African artists, strictly our six genres.

Apple Music South Africa
50%

Daily positions on Apple Music's most-played songs in South Africa, collected every morning. A song earns points for every day it charts — the higher it sits, the more points. The iTunes South Africa Dance chart adds a smaller boost for the dance genres.

YouTube
30%

New views on each song's official video during the chart week (not lifetime views), so fresh momentum counts.

Fan votes
15%

🔥 votes from signed-in fans on Frequency. One per song, per fan, per day — tied to an account so no fanbase can game it.

Frequency reads
5%

Reads of Frequency stories about the song.

Strictly South African

Amapiano songs qualify automatically. Every other song is checked by a Frequency editor before it can chart: the artist must be South African and the song must be Amapiano, 3 Step, Gqom, Afro House, Deep House or SA Hip Hop. International songs and other genres never chart, however big they are.

Momentum and badges

Each song also earns a momentum bonus for climbing week on week. That powers the ▲ bullets, Biggest Mover and Hot Shot Debut badges.

Integrity

Signals are log-scaled so one huge number can't buy a No. 1. Paid promotion never influences position, and sponsored placements are always labelled.

Listen where it counts

Every song links to Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube. Streaming there supports the artists directly.
