Blxckie returns with YENA, five years after B4Now
Fifteen tracks, A-Reece and Bas on the guest list, and a title that goes back to the name he built his career on.

Five years is a long time in South African hip hop. When Blxckie dropped B4Now in 2021, the Durban rapper was the new name everyone was quoting, and the album went on to be certified gold. His follow-up, YENA, finally arrived on Friday 30 October through Somnyama Music Entertainment and EMPIRE.
“Yena” as in “Somnyama Yena Yedwa”
The title is not random. It points back to Somnyama Yena Yedwa, the self-styled tag that has followed Blxckie since his breakout. Read that way, YENA is less a reinvention than a reintroduction: this is still him, alone, on his own terms.
Before release he thanked fans on Instagram for their patience and posted the tracklist, signing off with “uthando alupheli nanini”: love never ends.
What’s on it
Across 15 tracks the record moves between quiet, inward-looking writing, melodic experiments and straight-ahead energy. It opens on “mama, it’s all good”, a title that tells you where his head is after half a decade of expectations.
The features are pointed. A-Reece shows up on “bonkerz”. American rapper Bas joins him on “cover me”. Nigerian singer L.A.X, who appeared on the pre-release single “lonely”, adds a West African link, and Usimamane keeps things local on “dradi”, a nod to Durban. KindlyNxsh appears on “let em have it”, and producer K1llbrady gets his own moment on “brady’s interlude”.
The guest list reads like a map: Pretoria, Durban, Lagos and the US, with Blxckie in the middle of all of it.
The bigger picture
SA hip hop has spent the last few years watching amapiano and its offshoots take over radio, clubs and streaming charts. A 15-track album from one of the genre’s most commercially proven voices is a test of how much appetite there still is for a full-length rap record, and Blxckie has hedged smartly by building in melody and cross-border features.
Other cuts to look out for include “take me back”, “welcome to the function”, “vul’ amehlo (open ur eyes)” and “die tomorrow”. We will be watching how YENA moves on the charts over the next few weeks. It has a real shot at entering our SA Hip Hop Top 20.
